Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get a custom mouthguard?
Impressions are taken at your first appointment. The guard is usually ready within one to two weeks, depending on the laboratory turnaround time.
Claiming with Private Health Insurance
If you have private health insurance with dental extras, you may be eligible for a rebate on your custom mouthguard. At Dentists @ Canning Vale, we offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming for all major health funds.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
For adults whose bite is stable, a custom mouthguard can last several seasons with proper care. We recommend bringing your mouthguard to your regular check-up so we can inspect it for wear and fit. Children and teenagers will need their mouthguard replaced more frequently as their teeth and jaw grow.
Do children need custom mouthguards?
Absolutely, children's teeth are just as susceptible to sports injuries and the consequences (knocked-out or broken teeth) are the same. We size them for young athletes and can make them in fun colours.
Can I get a mouthguard if I have braces?
Yes. It is especially important to wear a mouthguard while undergoing orthodontic treatment to protect both your teeth and your orthodontic hardware from damage. A custom mouthguard can be designed to accommodate braces and adjusted as teeth move.
