DVA Gold Card vs. DVA White Card Dental Entitlements

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs issues health cards that determine the scope of dental care covered:

  • DVA Gold Card (All Conditions): Gold Card holders are entitled to clinically necessary dental treatments required to maintain good oral health, chewing function, and pain-free living. This includes general examinations, preventive cleans, fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, and dentures.
  • DVA White Card (Specific Conditions): White Card holders are covered for dental treatments directly related to accepted, service-related injuries or conditions approved by the DVA. If you have an accepted dental condition, please discuss this with our reception team when booking.
  • Annual Monetary Limits & Prior Approval: For certain high-cost treatments (such as crowns, bridge work, and complex prosthodontics), DVA applies annual monetary limits and may require prior clinical approval. Our team will verify your entitlements and discuss any requirements transparently before proceeding.

What Dental Services Are Covered Under DVA?

Eligible veterans can access a comprehensive range of clinical dental treatments under DVA arrangements, including:

  • Diagnostic & Preventive: Routine dental examinations, clinical evaluations, and diagnostic x-rays.
  • Hygiene & Periodontics: Professional dental cleans, tartar removal, and gum health maintenance.
  • Restorative Dentistry: Tooth-coloured composite fillings to repair cavities, wear, or damaged teeth.
  • Endodontics: Root canal therapy to save infected or deeply damaged natural teeth.
  • Oral Surgery: Emergency pain relief and necessary tooth extractions.
  • Dentures: Full or partial acrylic and chrome dentures, including denture relining, repairs, and adjustments (subject to DVA timeframes, typically every 6 years for new sets).
  • Mouthguards & Splints: Custom protective mouthguards and occlusal splints where clinically indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions About DVA Dental Care

Do I have to pay anything upfront for my DVA dental visit?

No. For covered dental services under the DVA Dental Schedule, we bill DVA directly. Eligible Gold Card holders (and White Card holders receiving treatment for accepted conditions) have no out-of-pocket costs.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see a dentist under DVA?

Gold Card holders generally do not require a GP referral for dental appointments — you can book directly with our clinic. White Card holders may need confirmation that dental treatment relates to an accepted condition.

Are dentures covered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs?

Yes. DVA covers full and partial dentures, as well as necessary relines and repairs. Under DVA guidelines, replacement dentures are typically available once every 6 years, unless there has been significant clinical change or tooth loss.

What if a procedure requires DVA prior approval?

If your recommended treatment includes services requiring prior financial authorization (such as crowns or specific surgical procedures), our clinic will submit the clinical documentation and request to DVA on your behalf before treatment begins.
